Border Crossing: Tunisia

Date of Border Crossing	March 2006
Point of Entry	Tunis by ferry from Genoa (Italy)
Passport and Visa	Passport has to be valid for at least another 6 months but no visa was required.
Insurance	Nobody checked if we had valid insurance, but our European insurance (green card) includes Tunisia anyway.
Drivers Licence	Did not get checked, but I am sure that officially you are required to have one.
Motorcycle papers	No Carnet the Passage was required. Vehicle registration papers were required.

How it went	On board the ferry they hand you three sets of papers which you need to fill in before you get off the boat in Tunis: - Personal entry card - Entry card for the motorcycle - Customs Declaration form First stop as you get off the ferry is the Immigration office. Here they will check and stamp your passport and your entry card (hang on to this card, you will need it when exiting). Then you can drive on to the customs inspection (That is where all the locals have to open all bags and unload all their language). For us it meant that an official welcomed us to Tunisia and signed the back of the vehicle entry card we had filled out. With that I queued at a booth further down, where the data of the vehicle entry card got entered into a computer. I was then handed a printout of this information and had to queue again on the backside of the same booth. Here the entry card got stamped. Meanwhile Khim had gone to one of the banks and changed some money. So now we were ready to go to the gate. At the gate they checked the passport and vehicle entry card and then let us pass. We did not have to hand it the customs declaration form we had so meticulously filled out.
Point of Exit	Ras Ajdir (Libya)
How it went	It was very easy going out of Tunisia. On arrival there was already a long line of cars waiting. So we went to join to queue, but immediately everybody in front of us started pointing at the 'Diplomatic Car' lane, where there was no queue. So we went there and sure enough somebody took our passports and the personal entry cards. The passport got stamped and then that was it. Nobody asked for the vehicle entry papers or anything else. The whole procedures took less than 5 minutes.
Additional Information	We didn't have to pay any fees neither on entering nor on leaving the country.
